Sen. Joni Ernst was raised on a farm in Iowa where her parents instilled in her classic working ethics and values of work, service and sacrifice. During her undergraduate years at Iowa State University she joined the university’s ROTC program and after graduation joined the US Army Reserves. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as a company commander in Kuwait and Iraq in 2003. She later became the first woman to serve as an elected official from Iowa at the federal level, and the first woman combat veteran to serve in the US Senate. She currently serves on the following committees:
• Senate Armed Services Committee
• Senate Agriculture
• Senate Environment & Public Works
• Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship
